A Weekend Reminder

"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

On our way to the infamous corn maze!

Friday:
After an easy day of classes (and an obscene amount of New Girl), I spent the day with friends.  We went out for dinner, craving something other than cafeteria food, where I happily consumed a ridiculous amount of sugar and sodium.  We then drove to a local haunted house located in approximately the middle of nowhere.  Instead of having one large haunted house, the event was made up of several smaller haunted houses along a path.  It was fun to cling to one another and pretend to be scared rather than startled.  After our haunted adventure, we needed something to warm our chilly fingertips, so we stopped to get a cheap cup of hot chocolate.  After we had successfully warmed our stomachs, we made our way back to the residence hall where we all curled up on my futon to watch a horror film.  It was as cheesy as expected, but it was nice to spend the night with people you care about.

Saturday:
I woke up early because my parents were coming to visit!  They came to help celebrate my birthday early as this was the only weekend that would fit into everyone's schedule.  Once they arrived, I got to show them around my room, and they were extremely impressed with my tidiness and the fact that I have been making my bed most days.  I was also able to give my dad his belated birthday present, because, as a poor college student, I didn't want to ship a package.  My mom brought with her dozens and dozens of her famous sugar cookie cutouts, all Halloween themed, as well as one of her cute skirts she thought would look more flattering on me and a bottle of lemon scented bath gel (my favorite!).  From there we went shopping, our main goal was to get me a few birthday presents, and what I mostly wanted was a new pea coat as I have been wearing the same one for about six years.  I was very fortunate and received a comfy new sweater and long sleeved shirt, an owl pillow (!!!), an Urban Decay eye shadow pallet, and a gorgeous gray pea coat.  We then went out for lunch and visited my aunt and uncle who live in the city I attend university.  I am thankful for my parents, for what they have given me, but mostly for the time they took to spend with me.  It meant more than what I can form into words.  Once I said goodbye to my parents, I went with a group of friends to the largest corn maze in my state.  What was supposed to be a 40 minute to an hour puzzle took two hours of wandering around in the dark, surrounded by corn, in just a flimsy sweater.  We eventually found the corn maze Jesus who led us to our salvation (aka reluctantly let us follow him).  I am most definitely converting.  The plan was to make our way through the other corn maze, as well as they hayride, but by the time we found the exit, we were too cold, tired, and irritated to do anything besides drive back o our city.  We stopped to grab something to eat and, again, went back to my room to curl up on the futon and watch another horror flick.  This one I slept through about all but ten minutes.

Sunday:
Sunday was a dreary day, but I had a leadership conference to attend, so I had a reason not to lounge around in bed all day.  I am the programmer for a leadership community, but besides me only two of the residents attended, one of them on their own accord, the other through severe persuasion.  I told him that if he goes and truly doesn't enjoy himself or feel like he is learning something, he can leave.  To my surprise actually, he stayed the entire time and was an active participant in activities and discussions.  Later, both of the residents that came told me they were happy they went.  Even though only two out of the entire group went, that made it worth it.  They came in expecting little, but left glad that they had taken to the time to come.  It was about the quality of experience rather than quantity.  I myself had a good time as well, though I am the sort of person who enjoys those kinds of things.  Actually, later, after Hall Council, I got a Facebook message from a girl that I met at a leadership retreat earlier in the year, and she attended this conference as well.  The message said: "Hey. I just wanted to tell you that I think you are a gorgeous girl and you should feel that way as well!" I was so taken aback by this.  It was so unexpected, sincere, and genuine.  She had no reason to say this, she had nothing to gain, but she did it anyway and it made my day.  It was so simple, but I'm going to remember this for a very long time.

This sort of entry almost seems mundane, but I wanted to write about my lovely weekend.  Sometimes I get a little bogged down by darkness, it's nice to know, and to write about, some of the fantastic things I do, or wonderful things that happen to me.  Nothing extraordinary happened this weekend, but I spent quality time with friends and family.  Every day was packed with things to do and I felt like I really used each day to my advantage.  I want to be able to look back on this as a reminder.
