Surpise Visits

"True friendship comes when the silence between two people is comfortable."

Natalie and I

This weekend, Natalie surprised me with a visit.  It was so unexpected and perfect.  It was just so good to see her, I love that we can just slip back into place as if no time has lapsed, but still keeping the parts of ourselves that have changed over the years.  I think that is a special thing.  I don't want to have to pretend I am the same person I was in high school, I don't want to have to revert back, I only want to look forward.

We had so much fun just catching up, painting nails, going shopping, touring the town, watching movies, and stuffing our faces with sugar.  It was similar and different and that is what I loved.  I liked being able to show Natalie my new life and let her know that she has earned a place in it.

We are in such good places in our lives.  We are both extremely involved on our campuses, we are excelling in our classes, we are independent, we have our own lives, we have made our own friends, and we are moving into actual adulthood.  Basically, we have our shit together.  And that is exactly what I want from my friends.  I want to be supported, not held back.

It is interesting because I could see it on her face that I've changed.  Actually, I would like to use the word grown.  Not in a negative way, in an appreciative way.  I'm less reserved than I was in high school, I'm more talkative, more open, more approachable.  She is different as well, though that is harder for me to pin down because I can't see inside her mind, but I can pick up on subtle differences, and it's all for the good.  Both of us, it's all for the good.

Her visiting couldn't have come at a better time.  I've been feeling so lacking of everything lately.  This change in routine was more than welcome.  I got to spend the weekend with one of my closest childhood friends, and not just as two people from the same small town, but two people who have moved on with their lives and refused to let a hometown suck them back in.
